Islamabad: The aftermath of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) violent protest has brought to light conflicting accounts of fatalities and injuries. While PTI lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat claimed 12 workers were killed due to firing and tear gas shelling, the party's spokesperson issued a separate statement reporting eight deaths among its supporters.
On Wednesday, officials from Polyclinic Hospital released an official report detailing the casualties and injuries. According to the hospital, two bodies and 26 injured individuals were brought in during the protests. Most of the injured, reportedly from various regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sustained gunshot wounds, highlighting the severity of the clashes. The protest march, which began from Islamabad's Blue Area, escalated into violent confrontations between PTI supporters and law enforcement near D-Chowk on Tuesday. The day-long clashes involved tear gas shelling and physical altercations, drawing widespread attention to the intensity of the unrest in Pakistan's capital.
Observers note that the differing casualty figures underscore the chaotic nature of the protests and the challenges in verifying information during such events. International human rights organizations have expressed concern over the loss of life and called for an impartial investigation into the use of force during the demonstrations. The incident highlights growing tensions in Pakistan as political protests increasingly turn violent, raising questions about the country’s ability to maintain stability amidst its ongoing political turmoil.
